Letter to Ryan

July, 2006
Dear Ryan,
I’m writing this the week before your departure for the Navy, with somewhat mixed emotions. I’m very happy for you; excited that you’re going to have an opportunity to explore and experience the whole big, exciting, exotic, sad, joyful, scary world. On the other hand, I’m sad. The sadness is all for us, your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who are watching you leave the nest, not absolutely sure you can fly yet! But we know it is your time to fly and we have confidence and faith in you; we certainly don‘t want to hold you back, however tempting it might be. We also hope you have learned, from us, a few things about living (both what to do and what most definitely not to do!), which will serve you well when needed. I admire your bravery in taking such a big step! You have been blessed with a kind and generous heart, a good and capable brain, many talents and physical abilities, and I believe you will use them all for your own good and the good of others, when presented with opportunities to serve. Please remember to balance all your privileges with responsibility. I wish you peace, love, happiness, joy, enthusiasm, success, wonder, curiosity, and awe, and someday a feeling of accomplishment! You deserve the best that life has to offer.
I love and appreciate you. Please always know that I am here for you, as are all your family. It will be my honor to have you reach out to me, when you need someone to talk to, someone to share experiences with, someone to give you advice (and someone to get advice from you!). You may feel alone and lonely during the weeks ahead (if you shed some tears, don‘t think you‘re the only one!), but you’re strong and you will do yourself proud! We’ll all be here cheering you on! I’ll miss you and will be looking forward to your leaves and times we can spend with you. Please stay in touch; that will be very important to us. Remember, while you are out there experiencing exciting, new things, we are here living our same ’ole lives! God bless you!
Peace and Love,
